Explanation

When we hear the word wealth, we think of money, land and gold. Valluvar introduces a new wealth: 'vendaamai', freedom from desire. He calls it 'vizhuchchelvam', the excellent wealth. 'Vizhu' means distinction or superiority. So among all riches the finest is desirelessness. The reason is simple. A rich man who still keeps wanting more is poor, and a man with nothing who feels 'I need nothing' is truly wealthy.

Valluvar mentions both worlds in 'eentillai aandum akthoppathu il'. 'Eendu' means here, in this world, and 'aandu' means there, in the other world. Some commentators explain it as this life and the next. Since there is nothing equal to it here or there, it is a wealth not destroyed by time or place. Money may be stolen, land may be seized, but no one can take away the wealth of desirelessness.

In daily life we measure our wealth by comparing it with others. However much we gather, when we see that someone else has more, a feeling of lack arises. But for a person who truly feels 'this is enough for me', that comparison is not needed. He sleeps in peace, and his relationships are held together by affection, not by money.

So the verse does not praise poverty. It does not forbid earning by honest work. It says that the quality of the mind that feels full with what it has honestly earned is the real wealth.

A story

Kuchela's Wealth

The Bhagavata Purana tells the story of Kuchela, also called Sudama. Sudama was a poor Brahmin and a boyhood friend of Krishna. They had studied together in the gurukulam of the sage Sandipani. When they grew up, Krishna became king of Dwaraka, while Sudama lived in poverty in a humble hut. Yet there was no envy and no complaint in his heart. The remembrance of the Lord was his wealth.

One day his wife begged him, 'Go to your friend Krishna and ask for help. The children are hungry.' Sudama hesitated at first. His heart did not like to use friendship for gain. But for his wife's sake he tied a few handfuls of flattened rice in a torn cloth and set out for Dwaraka.

The guards stopped him at the palace gate. But Krishna, hearing that his friend had come, ran out, embraced him and seated him lovingly on his own throne. He washed Sudama's feet himself. Embarrassed, Sudama tried to hide the rice he had brought. Krishna smiled, took it from him and ate it, saying, 'How sweet is the rice my friend brought with love!'

Sudama stayed there for some days. But he never asked for any help. In the joy of seeing Krishna he forgot his poverty. Only on the way back did he worry, 'What shall I tell my wife?' But when he reached his village, a beautiful mansion stood where his hut had been, and his wife and children, filled with prosperity, welcomed him, says the tale.

Kuchela did not crave wealth, yet wealth came seeking him. This is the lovely fruit of desirelessness. For one who first gains the wealth of wanting nothing, other wealth comes of its own accord. Tradition adds that he kept his simple ways even in the mansion.

This tale is the finest example for Valluvar's verse: no excellent wealth is equal to freedom from desire.
