Explanation

The last verse of the chapter sums up the worth of learning in one line. 'Kedil vizhuchchelvam' is the supreme wealth that does not perish. Other wealth such as gold, land and a house may perish, be stolen, or be destroyed by flood and fire. But learning does not perish. No one can take it away. It does not lessen when spent; given to others, it grows rather than diminishes in oneself. That is why it is the 'vizhuchchelvam', the supreme wealth.

'Maadalla matrai yavai' is a hard statement. Valluvar says the others are not wealth at all. 'Maadu' is an old word for wealth. Commentators explain this as saying that all the rest lack the nature of true wealth, and, being impermanent, are not wealth. Some take it not as a total disregard of other wealth but as an emphasis that nothing equals learning.

Learning here does not mean only the winning of a degree. It is the whole of knowledge, character, discernment and moral way. Such wealth goes with a person wherever he goes. Even if he loses everything, it will raise him again.

In our world we see people who lost house, land and property in flood or war rise again by the help of the learning they had. Refugees make a life in a new country by their learning. This verse is a witness to that.

A story

Nachiketa

The Katha Upanishad tells the story of a boy named Nachiketa. His father Vajashravasa gave away all his wealth in a sacrifice. But the cows he gave were old and gave no milk. Nachiketa was grieved to see it. Thinking there should be some truth even in giving, he asked, 'Father, to whom will you give me?' When he had asked three times, his father in anger said, 'I give you to Death.'

To keep his father's word, Nachiketa went to the world of Yama. Yama was not there, and the boy waited three days at the gate without food or water. When Yama returned, he was sorry that he had made a Brahmin boy wait three days and said he would grant three boons.

For the first boon Nachiketa asked that his father's anger be calmed and that he accept him. For the second he asked for knowledge of the sacrificial fire. Yama granted both. For the third he asked Yama to teach him the secret: 'What happens to a man after death? Does the soul exist?'

Yama hesitated. 'Even the gods doubted this. Ask something else. Ask sons who live a hundred years, gold, cattle, horses, land, long life, beautiful women, anything,' he said, tempting him. Nachiketa firmly refused: 'These will perish tomorrow; all are only for a few days. A man is never satisfied by wealth. I want no other boon than that knowledge.'

Seeing his firmness, Yama was pleased and taught him the knowledge of the Self. Nachiketa received it and returned. He who refused wealth and long life and asked for knowledge becomes a living example of the verse, 'learning is the imperishable supreme wealth.'

To reflect on

If you were offered any wealth or a deep truth you did not yet understand, which would you choose, and what does that tell you?
