Explanation

The lotus blooms when it sees the sun and closes when night comes. A person's mind too seems to bloom in joy and close in sorrow. But the mind of the wise is not so, says this verse. Wisdom that is in harmony with the world has a steady nature that neither blooms nor closes. It is to stay even in both: without pride in victory and without sagging in defeat.

'Ulagam thazheeiya thotpam' is knowledge that has embraced the people of the world as its own. Such knowledge rises above the joys and sorrows of the individual and understands the nature of the world. So it has the strength to stay clear, not disturbed, when joy and sorrow come.

Blooming and closing are natural feelings. Valluvar does not deny them. But he says that to decide anything while seized by them is unwise. Hasty decisions taken in joy and wrong decisions taken in grief are many. The wise feel emotions but are not carried away by them.

Some commentators take 'ulagam thazheeiya' as knowledge that the world praises and others as knowledge that is in tune with the world. In any case its essence is a steady mind that neither blooms nor closes.

In life today there are those who lose their heads on a success and those who collapse at a defeat. The maturity of mind that takes both alike is wisdom. It makes us live calmly and firmly.

A story

The Face of Rama

In the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana there is a famous scene. King Dasharatha decided to crown Rama. The whole city was steeped in joy. Vasishtha called Rama and told him that the coronation would be tomorrow. Rama heard and accepted it humbly. But no one saw surprise or pride on his face.

The same night, by Manthara's scheme, Kaikeyi asked for her two boons. She called Rama and said that by the boons Dasharatha had given her, he must go to the forest for fourteen years and Bharata must be king. Dasharatha sank in grief and stood unable even to speak. All in that hall were plunged in sorrow.

Rama was calm. Valmiki writes that his face was just as it had been on hearing of the coronation. It did not bloom at the coronation news, and it did not close at the news of exile. 'So be it. I shall keep my father's word,' he said quietly.

Then he went to his mother Kausalya and told her what had happened in a gentle voice. Kausalya wept. Lakshmana was angry. Rama comforted all. 'This is the act of fate. Nothing changes by grief,' he said.

Rama's balance was not easy. It was the fruit of years of practice. He knew the world well. He understood that joy and sorrow come in turn. So his mind stood steady in any change.

To such a wise man the whole world seems his own. The sight of him leaving a kingdom for his father's word is still honoured as an example.
