Explanation

The verse says that to live in harmony with the way the world works is wisdom. Though it seems a simple thought at first sight, there are many subtleties in it. To fit with the world does not mean agreeing even to the world's evils. It means understanding the nature of the world, its circumstances and its people, and arranging one's conduct accordingly.

'Evvathu uraivathu ulagam' means however the world lives. 'Ulagaththodu avvathu uraivathu arivu' means to live fitted with that world in the same way is wisdom. Some commentators take it to mean living in harmony with the good customs that the world accepts. Others take it to mean knowing the nature, time and place of the world and acting accordingly.

The wisdom of the verse is that a person should not give up his own character, but also should not be stubborn in a way that does not suit his surroundings. A river flows in its own way and turns with the slope of the land, yet never forgets its goal of reaching the sea. The wise likewise agree with the world yet do not leave their dharma.

If taken too far this would amount to nodding at everything. Elsewhere Valluvar also tells us to oppose what is evil. So fitting with the world means fitting only in what is good.

In life today, when we go to a new place, a new job or among new people, to learn their ways and cooperate is wisdom. At the same time not losing our values is also wisdom.

A story

The Pandavas in Virata's City

In the Virata Parva of the Mahabharata the Pandavas finished their twelve years of forest life. One more year of hiding remained. They had to live concealed, unrecognised by anyone. If recognised, another twelve years of forest life would begin. So they planned with great care.

They chose the city of Virata, king of Matsya. Near the town they hid their weapons wrapped in a cloth in a shami tree. They arranged it to look like a corpse and spread fear so that people would not go near. Then each, taking a suitable disguise, went to the palace.

Yudhishthira went as the Brahmin 'Kanka' and became the king's dice companion and adviser on conduct. Bhima joined as 'Ballava', a cook and wrestler. Arjuna set himself up as 'Brihannala', a teacher of dance and music to the princess Uttara. Nakula tended horses. Sahadeva guarded cows. Draupadi joined the queen as a maid named Sairandhri.

All of them had been kings and warriors earlier. Now they lived as servants, teachers and a cook. They fitted themselves to the world as it was. They did not show their former glory; they did fully the duties of their new state. Yudhishthira won Virata's regard by his counsel. Bhima pleased the palace by his cooking and his wrestling.

In between, when the commander Keechaka tried to dishonour Draupadi, Bhima killed him in secret. Even after that the Pandavas did not reveal their identity. Only when the Kauravas came to seize Virata's cows did Arjuna show his valour, and that near the year's end.

At the close of the year they revealed themselves. Virata welcomed them with honour and gave his daughter Uttara in marriage to Abhimanyu. It is a proof of how living in harmony with the world makes even hiding a success.
