Explanation

One of the finest marks of wisdom is to know beforehand what is to come. 'Aavathu' is what is going to happen. The wise sense in advance what will occur. But the unwise are unable to know it. This is not a kind of astrology; it is a fine ability to link causes and effects. It is to see the state of an act today and sense its result tomorrow.

All that happens in the world is bound by cause and effect. One who plants a seed senses the future tree; one who sees water seeping at a hollow senses the danger of the dam breaking. In this way the wise estimate great results from small signs. The unwise sense nothing until the result arrives.

The word 'arikallaathavar' gives the sense of those unable to know even if they try. That is, lack of wisdom is a deficiency, and it also blocks foresight. So they are bewildered when trouble comes. Some explain that foresight comes not from divine power but from fine observation.

This verse also serves as the base for the next verses (fearing what should be feared, guarding in advance). Only one who knows what is to come can fear and guard accordingly.

In life today, foresight in health, money and relationships is wisdom. One who avoids a small expense today sees a large saving tomorrow. One who looks after the body today avoids illness tomorrow. Thus foresight makes our life easier.

A story

The Three Fish

The story of the three fish in the Panchatantra is famous. In a large pond lived three fish. Their names were Anagatavidhata, Pratyutpannamati and Yadbhavishya. The first was one who knows what is to come and prevents it; the second acts with wit when the time comes; the third thinks, 'What is to happen will happen.'

One day some fishermen passed near the pond. Seeing that the pond held many fish, they said to one another, 'Tomorrow we will come with nets and catch them.' Anagatavidhata heard this. At once it said to its friends, 'Danger is coming. The fishermen will come tomorrow. Let us leave this pond now by the stream and go to another large pond.'

Pratyutpannamati said, 'When danger comes we can somehow escape. Why go now?' Yadbhavishya said, 'I will not leave this pond where my grandfather and great-grandfather lived. Whatever fate is will happen.' Anagatavidhata alone left by the stream and reached a safe large pond.

The next day the fishermen came with their nets and cast them in the pond. Pratyutpannamati and Yadbhavishya were caught. Pratyutpannamati at once lay still as if dead. The fishermen took it for a dead fish and threw it to one side. It slid slowly into the water and escaped. But Yadbhavishya, trusting fate, lay without struggle and was killed by the fishermen.

The story shows three kinds of mind. Anagatavidhata, who acted by foresight, escaped without any trouble. Pratyutpannamati, who decided quickly when the situation came, saved its life, though perhaps with hurt. Yadbhavishya, who did nothing and trusted fate, perished.

The wise know what is to come; the unwise are unable to know it. The benefit of foresight shows clearly in this tale. In our own lives we make such decisions daily.
