Explanation

Valluvar's answer to what a sweet word is lies in this verse. It has three qualities: mixed with love, free of deceit, and coming from those who have understood the truth. These are the marks of a sweet word.

'Eeram alaii' is mixed with love. Eeram is the quality of being moist, that is, tenderness. As a plant grows when the soil has moisture, a relationship grows when a word has moisture. A dry word, though true, does not settle in the heart.

'Padiru ilavaam' is without deceit. To deceive with sweet speech is not a sweet word. It is a false sweetness. In a true sweet word there is no intention to cheat. Through this Valluvar says that sweetness and honesty cannot be separated.

For 'semporul kandaar', Parimelazhagar takes great persons who have seen the true reality. That is, those who have realised the truth of life naturally speak with tenderness. Others take it as those with an upright purpose. The two meanings fit together.

The verse shows that a sweet word is not only a technique of speech but a state of heart. If the heart is full of love and honesty, the word becomes sweet of itself.

In today's world there is plenty of sweet talk meant for selling. It has neither moisture nor freedom from deceit. The sweet word Valluvar speaks of is not like that. It is speech that wishes good to the hearer.

In the Ramayana Rama is the embodiment of this verse. Valmiki praises him as one who speaks first with a smile and who does not speak harsh words.

A story

Rama Who Speaks First with a Smile

In the first chapter of the Bala Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana the sage Narada describes Rama's qualities to Valmiki. Among them is a note on Rama's speech. Rama is praised as 'smita-purva-bhashi', one who speaks first with a smile. When anyone came, he would look at him with a bright face and himself speak first.

At the opening of the Ayodhya Kanda this quality of Rama is shown at length. It is said there that he would not answer harshly even those who spoke harsh words to him, and that he never forgot even a small good done to him and would praise it. This was a great reason why people loved him.

It shows on the day he leaves for the forest too. His father Dasharatha lies unconscious in tears. Kaikeyi tells him firmly of the boons. Rama spoke no harsh word. "Mother, it is my duty to fulfil my father's word. Why do you grieve over this? I leave now," he replied in a soft voice.

When Lakshmana boiled with anger, Rama calmed him. "Kaikeyi is my mother; my father's word is supreme for me. Do not blame her," he said lovingly. That firmness of mind and gentleness is the character of a great king.

Meeting Guha, Shabari, Sugriva, Vibhishana and others in the forest, Rama's first word was always loving. Even to enemies he spoke no harsh word. Valmiki says that even after the war with Ravana ended, he told Vibhishana to perform the funeral rites for the dead Ravana.

Such speech came naturally to him without deceit, because his heart was full of love and dharma. Rama's life is an example of the verse's idea that a sweet word is a state of the heart.

To reflect on

Is my speech sweet because my heart is, or only because I wish to be liked?
