Explanation

This verse is a wonder in the form of a question. Why does one who has seen from his own experience that the sweet word brings sweetness still speak harshly? Valluvar's wonder is that it does not fit with reason.

'Insol inidheendral' is the sweet word yielding sweetness. That is, he has realised that the sweet word gives joy to others and to himself. Yet Valluvar asks why he speaks harshly. In his question there is no reproach; there is sorrow and wonder.

'Vansol' is a hard, wounding word. Some think it shows them as strong. But they do not know that strength is the ability to speak gently. A harsh word is often an expression of anger, fear or insecurity.

Parimelazhagar takes 'evankolo' as 'for what reason'. Because it comes as a question and not Valluvar's direct counsel, it makes the reader reflect on himself. It is a question we must answer ourselves.

There are many reasons for speaking harshly: habit, anger, pride, the wish to push others down. None of them yields lasting benefit. The victory won by a harsh word is temporary; the relationship lost is permanent.

In today's social media the question of this verse rings very apt. Having seen the sweetness of the sweet word, why do such harsh words fly across the networks?

The harsh words of Shishupala in the Mahabharata are the proof. They led to his own destruction.

A story

Shishupala's Hundred Insults

The Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata describes the Rajasuya sacrifice. Yudhishthira performed the Rajasuya at Indraprastha. Kings of all lands were invited. At the start of the sacrifice the question arose of whom to give the first honour. Bhishma said Krishna could be chosen. Sahadeva supported it. All agreed.

Shishupala, king of Chedi, opposed it. He was Krishna's cousin, but hostile to him. Rising in the assembly, he began to revile Bhishma and Krishna harshly. "Is this cowherd a king? Is he to have the first honour?" he shouted. Harsh words continued to pour from his mouth.

Krishna stayed calm. The reason was that Shishupala's mother Shrutashrava had asked Krishna for a boon: "Forgive the faults my son commits." Krishna had promised to bear a hundred faults, says the Mahabharata. So he kept counting each insult.

Shishupala did not stop. Yudhishthira, Bhishma and the assembly tried to calm him. Bhishma warned him in a way that foretold his end. But he did not stop his harsh words. The count of a hundred was crossed.

When he spoke the hundred and first insult Krishna addressed the assembly. "He is my cousin. I have completed the promise I gave his mother. Now he has become an enemy of dharma." Krishna sent his Sudarshana discus. Shishupala's head was cut off. His light merged into Krishna, says the Bharata.

It is not that Shishupala did not know sweetness; because of his enmity he did not seek it. Though he had a hundred chances, he refused to speak one sweet word. He paid for it with his life.

The story reminds us that this is the end of one who chose the path of the harsh word when the path of the sweet word was open.

To reflect on

Have I ever kept scorning someone long after a kind word would have repaired things?
