Explanation

This verse says what is the true ornament for a person. Not gold and gems; humility and the sweet word are the ornament. Others are not, it says.

'Panivu' is walking low, restraint, the state free of pride. 'Insol' is the sweet speech seen in the earlier verses. Valluvar joins these two and calls them the ornament.

An ornament is something that raises beauty. Jewellery raises the beauty of the body; humility and sweet speech raise the beauty of personality. Jewellery raises one by appearance, not by nature; humility and sweet speech raise by nature.

It makes us think that Valluvar adds 'alla matrup pira'. He denies that the others are ornaments. Even wealth, rank and learning do not beautify without humility and sweet speech. If a learned man speaks with pride, his learning adds no beauty to him.

Giving, courage and learning are high things; but they shine only when joined with humility and sweet speech.

We can feel this beautifully today. If a successful person behaves humbly, his fame grows. If a rich man speaks sweetly, his wealth gains respect. If one in office is humble, he lives in the hearts of the people.

Yudhishthira's humility before the Mahabharata war is a high example of this verse.

A story

Yudhishthira's Humility Before the War

The Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata tells an event before the war of Kurukshetra began. Both armies stood drawn up. It was the time when conches were about to sound. Then Yudhishthira suddenly put his armour and weapons down in his chariot, and without sandals, with folded hands, began to walk toward the enemy army.

His brothers and Krishna were astonished. "Brother, where are you going? Why go to the enemy before the war?" they asked. Yudhishthira did not answer but kept walking. Krishna smiled and said, "He goes to take the blessings of the elders."

Yudhishthira went first to Bhishma and bowed at his feet. "Grandsire, I have to fight you. Give me permission and your blessing for it," he said. Bhishma was pleased. "Your humility befits your line. Had you not come to me now, I would have cursed you. Victory will be yours. In due time I shall tell you the way of my death," he said, as the Mahabharata tells.

Next Yudhishthira went to Drona. With the same humility he asked leave. Drona blessed him. Then he met Kripa and Shalya and received their blessings. Each of them praised his humility.

Here Yudhishthira did not speak proudly of the strength of his army or of his own righteousness. He spoke in simple words with respect. So even from those who were enemies he received blessings.

That day war was declared. But Yudhishthira's word and deed showed that humility has a place even on a battlefield. His humility shone for him as an ornament greater than any weapon.

After the war too Yudhishthira acted with the same humility. After winning, he kept his elders in his court with respect. His fame is spoken of even today; the reason is his humility and sweet speech.

To reflect on

Where do I need to put down my armour and walk toward someone with folded hands?
