From the Vishnu PuranaWhen Lakshmi Left Indra
From the Vishnu Purana. Once the sage Durvasa lovingly presented Indra with a garland of heavenly flowers. Seated on his elephant Airavata, Indra carelessly tossed it onto the elephant's head. The elephant flung it to the ground and trampled it.
Enraged, Durvasa cursed him: 'You did this out of pride in your riches. May all the fortune of the three worlds leave you.' At once Lakshmi departed from Indra's realm. With her went the gods' strength and splendour; plants withered and sacrifices ceased. The weakened gods were defeated by the asuras.
The gods took refuge in Vishnu. Under his guidance, gods and asuras together churned the ocean of milk. From the ocean Lakshmi rose again, holding a lotus. She chose Vishnu as her consort and took her place on his chest. Under her gracious glance the gods regained their splendour and strength.
When Lakshmi came, everything came with her; when she left, everything left with her. It was pride in wealth that drove her away.
