Meaning

The cobra, knowing its venom, lives in hiding; the harmless water snake lies out in the open. So the deceitful hide themselves, while the guileless have nothing to hide.

Explanation

The venomous cobra, aware of its own poison, lives hidden in anthills and thickets, out of sight. The harmless water snake lies out in the sun without fear. Those with nothing to hide do not hide.

So it is with people, says Avvaiyar. Those who carry deceit in their hearts hide their true nature, covering themselves with sweet words and a fine appearance. The guileless do not hide; their lives are an open book.

The verse gives two lessons: be wary of those who conceal too much, and keep your own life honest enough that there is nothing to conceal. Openness is the foundation of trust.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Aranya Kanda)

The Golden Deer and the False Ascetic

From the Valmiki Ramayana. At Panchavati, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana lived simply, with nothing to hide. Their hut was open to all, and they welcomed visiting sages with love.

Ravana plotted to carry Sita away. He ordered his uncle Maricha to take the form of a golden deer. The beautiful creature, glittering with silver spots, frolicked near the hut. Delighted, Sita begged Rama to catch it for her. 'It may be a demon's trick,' Lakshmana warned. Rama gave chase; when his arrow struck, Maricha fell in his true form, crying out in a perfect imitation of Rama's voice, 'Ha Sita! Ha Lakshmana!'

Hearing the cry, Sita insisted that Lakshmana go too. Then Ravana came disguised as a saffron-robed ascetic, asking for alms. The guileless Sita welcomed him as a guest. At once Ravana revealed his true form and carried her away.

Like the venomous cobra, the deceivers came hidden, one as a deer and one as an ascetic. Sita, who had no guile, hid nothing, like the harmless water snake.
