Utanpiranthaar surraththaar enrirukka vaentaa / Utanpiranthae kollum viyaathi - utan piravaa / Maamalaiyil ulla marunthae pinitheerkkum / Ammarunthu poalvaarum untu

Meaning

Do not rely on people simply because they are siblings or relatives. A disease born with the body can kill, while a herb from a distant mountain, born nowhere near us, cures it. There are people like that medicine too.

Explanation

Being born with us does not make a thing good for us. A disease born with the body can kill that very body, while a herb growing far away on a mountain, with no connection to us at all, cures it.

In the same way, says Avvaiyar, do not trust anyone blindly simply because they are a sibling or relative. Some kin may harm us like a disease, and some with no tie of blood may help us like medicine. The true measure of kinship is love and help, not birth.

This is not a call to despise family. It asks us to measure trust by conduct, not by the name of the relationship alone. Many friends, teachers and neighbours have been the mountain herb in our lives.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Yuddha Kanda)

Hanuman Brings the Mountain of Herbs

From the Valmiki Ramayana. In the war at Lanka, the Brahmastra loosed by Ravana's son Indrajit struck down Rama, Lakshmana and most of the monkey army. Silence fell over the battlefield.

Vibhishana was Ravana's own brother. He had been insulted and driven out for advising Ravana to return Sita, and it was Rama, no relation at all, who took him in and gave him refuge. Now it was the aged Jambavan who named the way to save the fallen: 'Healing herbs that restore life grow on a mountain of herbs in the Himalayas. Only Hanuman can bring them.'

Hanuman leapt across the sea and the lands to the Himalayas. Rather than lose time searching for the right herbs, he tore off the whole peak, held it in his hands and flew back to Lanka. As the fragrance of the herbs reached them, Rama, Lakshmana and the monkeys rose up revived.

Ravana, born a brother, became Vibhishana's enemy; the mountain herb brought by Hanuman, born no kin at all, saved Rama and Lakshmana. (Later, when Lakshmana fell to Ravana's spear, Hanuman brought the mountain of herbs a second time.)

To reflect on

Has someone with no tie of family helped you like medicine? Did you ever thank them?
