Meaning

Those who leave in hard times, like water birds deserting a dried-up pond, are not true kin. True kin are like the kotti, the water lily and the neydhal flower, which cling to that same pond.

Explanation

When a pond is full, birds flock to it. When the water dries up, they all fly away. But the plants rooted in that same pond, the kotti, the water lily and the blue neydhal, cling there even when it is dry, and bloom again when the water returns.

That, says Avvaiyar, is what kinship is. Those who crowd round in good times and leave when trouble comes are not kin; they are like water birds seeking their own gain. Those who stay at your side in hard times are your true kin.

Think of who came looking for you when you lost a job or fell ill, and the verse becomes clear. We too should be that kind of water lily for others.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Ayodhya Kanda)

Lakshmana Follows Rama into Exile

From the Valmiki Ramayana. On the very day Rama was to be crowned, the order came that he must go to the forest for fourteen years. Rama calmly gave up the palace and the throne and set out for exile.

Lakshmana fell at his feet. 'What would I do in an Ayodhya without you? I will walk ahead of you with bow and spade, clearing the way. I will bring fruits and roots and serve you and Sita.' Rama asked him to stay and care for their mothers, but Lakshmana would not be moved. His mother Sumitra blessed him: 'Think of Rama as Dasharatha, Sita as your mother, and the forest as Ayodhya, and go.'

For fourteen years Lakshmana never left Rama's side. He kept watch through the nights, built their huts and risked his life in battle.

Leaving a wealthy Ayodhya to cling to Rama in the hard life of the forest, like a lily in a dried pond, Lakshmana is the model of true kinship.

To reflect on

Who stood by you in a hard time? Who is going through difficulty now that you could stand beside?
