Seeriyar kettaalum seeriyarae; seeriyar marru / Allaathaar kettaal ang kennaakum? - seeriya / Ponnin kutamutainthaal ponnaakum ennaakum / Mannin kutam utainthak kaal

Meaning

The noble remain noble even when ruined. A broken golden pot is still gold; what is a broken clay pot worth?

Word by word

the excellent, the noble
even when ruined
those who are not
what becomes of them
a golden pot
if it breaks
is still gold
an earthen pot

Explanation

When a golden pot breaks, its pieces are still gold; they can be melted down and made into a pot again. When an earthen pot breaks, its shards are worth nothing. So it is with the excellent: even when they lose wealth and position, the quality within them stays unchanged, like gold.

Avvaiyar repeats the idea of the fourth verse with a new image. There it was the burnt conch; here the broken golden pot. Both say the same thing: a person's worth lies not in outward circumstance but in inner nature.

In a moment when failure seems to have broken us, the verse offers comfort: if your character is gold, you can be made whole again.

From the Mahabharata (Vana Parva)

The Questions of the Yaksha

From the Mahabharata. One day during their exile the Pandavas were desperate with thirst. Nakula went in search of water and found a lovely lake. As he bent to drink, a voice said, 'Answer my questions first, then drink.' Nakula ignored it, drank, and fell lifeless. Sahadeva, Arjuna and Bhima met the same fate.

At last Yudhishthira came. Though he had lost his kingdom and wealth and was wandering in the forest, he listened humbly to the Yaksha's questions. 'What is weightier than the earth?' 'A mother.' 'What is higher than the sky?' 'A father.' 'What is the greatest wonder?' 'That every day creatures die, yet those who remain think they will live forever.' To every question he gave answers full of dharma.

Pleased, the Yaksha said, 'I will restore one of your brothers to life.' Yudhishthira chose Nakula. 'Why not Bhima or Arjuna?' the Yaksha asked. 'My father had two wives, Kunti and Madri. As Kunti's son, I live; let one son of Madri live too.' The Yaksha, who was Dharma himself, restored all four.

Even having lost everything, Yudhishthira's dharma shone like a broken golden pot that is gold still.

To reflect on

If you lost everything outward, what quality in you would remain gold?
