Explanation

This verse repeats the word kootram, death, again and again. To the unlearned, the words of the wise taste bitter as death; they cannot bear advice. To the wicked, dharma is death, because right conduct blocks their desires. The plantain tree is cut down once it has borne its bunch; its own fruit is its end.

The last line says that one who does not live in harmony with the home is death to that home. It was sung of women, in the social outlook of its time; today we can read it more broadly: anyone who breaks a family's harmony brings ruin on that home.

The first two lines test us. Do we treat advice we dislike as death, or as medicine? Being able to hear a bitter truth is where growth begins.

From the Mahabharata (Udyoga Parva)

Krishna's Mission of Peace

From the Mahabharata. When their exile and year in hiding were over, the Pandavas asked for their kingdom back. To prevent war, Krishna himself went to Hastinapura as their envoy.

In the Kaurava court Krishna spoke of peace and dharma: 'Give the Pandavas their rightful share. Not the whole kingdom; give them just five villages.' Bhishma, Drona, Vidura and Duryodhana's own mother Gandhari all urged the same. But to Duryodhana their counsel tasted like the voice of death. 'I will not give them land enough to cover the point of a needle,' he said.

Worse, he planned to seize Krishna, who had come as an envoy. Then Krishna revealed his cosmic form, with gods and worlds appearing within him. The court trembled; the blind Dhritarashtra was granted sight for a moment to behold it. Still Duryodhana's heart did not change.

To Duryodhana, who saw the words of the wise as death, the dharma he rejected became his death at Kurukshetra.

Has advice that tasted bitter at the time later proved right?
