Explanation

Keeping the exact shape of the previous verse and changing only the words, Avvaiyar shows the opposite direction. Just as goodness enters us step by step, so does wrongdoing.

It begins with seeing the wicked, then hearing their talk, then speaking of their deeds, and finally living in step with them; by then we are walking their way without noticing. The word thiruvatra, 'without grace', is worth noticing: there is neither grace nor beauty in the words of the wicked, and yet they have a pull.

Read the two verses together and the message is plain: where we gather is what we become. Stepping away from a circle of gossip, and refusing to listen to talk that spreads hatred, is this verse in practice today.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Ayodhya Kanda)

Kaikeyi Listens to Manthara

From the Valmiki Ramayana. The news that Rama was to be crowned filled Ayodhya with joy. Kaikeyi's maid Manthara brought her the news, seething. Kaikeyi, though, was delighted; she loved Rama as she loved her own son Bharata, and she gave Manthara one of her own ornaments for the news. Manthara flung it away.

Then Manthara began her poisoned words. 'If Rama becomes king, you will be Kausalya's servant, and Bharata's very life will be in danger,' she said, again and again. At first Kaikeyi scolded her. Manthara did not stop, and the more Kaikeyi listened, the more her heart slowly turned.

In the end Kaikeyi reminded Dasharatha of two boons he had once granted her, and asked for the kingdom for Bharata and fourteen years of forest exile for Rama. Dasharatha died of grief. Bharata, on his return, rebuked his mother and refused the throne.

Even Kaikeyi, who had a good heart, became the cause of great sorrow once she listened to and fell in step with someone ill-intentioned.
