Explanation

The stem of a water lily grows only as tall as the water in the pond; if the water rises, so does the lily. With this lovely image Avvaiyar links three truths: understanding grows as far as one's learning, wealth comes in measure with past austerity, and character follows the culture one is raised in.

Here kulam is best understood not as caste by birth but as the family setting a person grows up in and the values it gives them. In Nalvazhi, Avvaiyar herself rejects pride of birth, declaring that the givers are the truly high.

The hopeful message of the verse is this: as the lily rises when the water rises, understanding rises when learning grows, and life rises when good deeds grow. So instead of saying 'this is all I can know', keep raising the water.

From the Chandogya Upanishad

The Education of Svetaketu

From the Chandogya Upanishad. The sage Uddalaka Aruni sent his son Svetaketu to a teacher's house at the age of twelve. After twelve years of studying the Vedas, the young man came home at twenty-four, full of pride, believing he had learned everything.

His father asked him, 'Did you ask for the teaching by which the unheard becomes heard, the unknown becomes known?' Svetaketu was taken aback. 'Surely my teachers did not know it, or they would have told me. Please teach it to me yourself.'

Uddalaka taught through simple examples. By knowing one lump of clay, all things made of clay are known. He asked his son to break open a banyan seed; inside, nothing could be seen. 'From that subtle essence you cannot see, this great tree arises. That is the truth, that is the Self, and that, Svetaketu, you are (tat tvam asi).'

Twelve years of study had brought Svetaketu's understanding only so far; his father's teaching raised it higher, as rising water lifts the lily.
