Explanation

Youth is sweet, a flower is lovely, and a woman's beauty is worthy of praise. Yet Avvaiyar says that without the right setting, all three end only in sorrow.

Youth spent in poverty wastes away with no means to fulfil its dreams. A flower that blooms out of season withers with no one to wear it or offer it in worship. Beauty that has no companion fades with no one to share it. The phrase 'even sweet things, in a measure of sorrow' says it all: when hardship surrounds them, even sweet things lose their sweetness.

The verse makes us think in two directions. First, a community should stand by its young so that their gifts are not wasted. Second, everything needs its proper time and place. Helping a poor student with a scholarship, or visiting an elderly person who lives alone, is this verse put into practice today.

From the Mahabharata (the tale of Nala)

Damayanti in the Forest

From the Mahabharata. Damayanti, princess of Vidarbha, chose King Nala of Nishadha as her husband, passing over even the gods. Their life together was happy, until, through the scheming of Kali, Nala lost his kingdom and all his wealth at dice.

With a single garment between them, Nala and Damayanti went into the forest. Hunger and grief wore them down. Unable to bear that Damayanti suffered because of him, Nala left her one night while she slept. Waking to find him gone, she wandered the forest weeping. A princess's youth and beauty went to waste there, of use to no one, like a flower blooming out of season.

Yet she never abandoned her faithfulness. Through many trials she reached her father's house, and with her sharp wit she recognised Nala, who was living in disguise as a charioteer. Nala won back his kingdom and the two were reunited.

The story shows how poverty and separation turn even sweet things to sorrow, and how they bloom again when the right time comes.

To reflect on

Is there a young person near you whose gifts are going to waste for lack of opportunity? How might you stand by them?
