Vishnu Purana, Book 3Vyasa Divides the Veda into Four
From the Vishnu Purana. In the beginning the Veda was one, boundless as the ocean. In every age human life and strength grew less. Krishna Dvaipayana, son of Parashara, saw that the people of the Kali age would not be able to learn and remember the whole Veda.
So he divided it into four: Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva, and taught each to a disciple: the Rig to Paila, the Yajur to Vaishampayana, the Sama to Jaimini and the Atharva to Sumantu. Because he divided the Veda he was called Veda Vyasa. Later, for those who could not study the Veda, he gave the Mahabharata and the Puranas.
The book in the Goddess's hand is a sign of this compassion. Knowledge is like the ocean; to divide it into leaves that people can receive is grace. The Upanishads, the closing portions of the Veda that Kambar calls her army, lie within that book.
