Explanation

In Tamil 'porul' means wealth, a thing, and the meaning of a word. Kambar lets all these senses play in a single verse. In the first two lines porul is money; it 'poykkum', deceives and slips away. In the last line porul is 'uraipporul', the meaning of the word.

Valluvar said: 'Learning is the imperishable, excellent wealth; all other things are not true riches.' Kambar says the same with devotion. Money is needed for the household, and he does not deny it. But it does not last. Only learning cannot be taken by thieves or swept away by floods, and grows the more one gives it away.

Tradition of Kambar's stray verses (thanippaadal)

'Are You the Only King?' Kambar's Answer

From the Tamil tradition of stray verses. Tradition says Kambar was a poet at the Chola court, and that at one point bitterness arose between the king and the poet. The king tried to bend the poet with his wealth and power.

As Kambar left the court, it is said, he spoke a venba: 'Are you the only king? Is this rich land yours alone? Did I learn Tamil by knowing you? Is there a king who would not welcome me at once? Is there a branch a monkey cannot leap onto?'

Avvaiyar said the same in the Moodhurai: 'A king is honoured only in his own country; the learned are honoured wherever they go.' A king's wealth stops at his borders; a learned person's wealth goes with them everywhere. That is why Kambar praises the Goddess's gift as 'the wealth that never perishes'.
