Explanation

This is a meditation. Beginning with her hair, the poet draws her form in the mind piece by piece: eyes, hands, feet, lips, her seat, her body, her ornaments. At the end he says these 'stay in my heart and on my tongue and never leave'.

Why heart and tongue? What stays in the heart is remembrance; what stays on the tongue is speech. When remembrance and speech are one, that is complete worship. Finally he calls her 'perundhiru', great Shri. Thiru means wealth, beauty and auspiciousness. That the Goddess of learning is the greatest wealth completes the thought of the verses before.

Valmiki Ramayana, Sundara Kanda

Sita Holds Rama in Her Heart in the Ashoka Grove

From the Sundara Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana. Ravana carried Sita away and held her captive in the Ashoka grove of Lanka. For ten months she lived surrounded by rakshasis, amid threats. Ravana tempted her with wealth and a throne; she answered him with a blade of grass placed between them, speaking as if to the grass.

One thing sustained her: the remembrance of Rama. His form, his words and his name were in her heart and on her tongue. Hanuman, who had leapt across the sea, hid in a tree and began softly to sing Rama's story. At the sound of that name Sita's face lit up. Hanuman came down and gave her Rama's signet ring, and seeing it she rejoiced as if she had seen her husband himself.

When the form of the beloved never leaves the heart, no prison can imprison the heart. Kambar sang this very scene in his Iramavataram; in this verse he holds the Goddess in his heart in the same way.

What remembrance or image holds you up in hard times?
