Explanation

This verse states the two ways of handling ikal and their outcomes in contrast. One is to lean before ikal, that is, to bend, yield and conduct oneself humbly; it brings 'aakkam', prosperity and growth. The other is to increase and nurture ikal; it brings 'kedu', ruin, drawing swiftly toward destruction, says Valluvar.

Here 'ookkumaam' is used in the sense of urging on. Enlarging ikal is like inviting ruin. Every small anger and every small taunt becomes a step toward ruin. But each small yielding becomes a seed for prosperity.

Commentators take this as a continuation of the previous verse. The previous verse told the danger of standing against ikal and winning; this verse tells its opposite face, the prosperity of humility. Taken together they give a complete view of dealing with ikal.

Prosperity is not merely wealth; it is the flourishing of relationships, peace of mind, social esteem and business growth. Families, institutions and villages that avoid ikal grow; those that nurse it break up.

So in any complication, to pause and think 'Shall I enlarge this or calm it?' may decide our future. Patience, speaking directly, and not believing the tales of a third party are further ways to calm ikal, and though they seem small they are fortresses that guard relationships. Such habits make ikal a visitor that does not stay.

A story

The Lion and Sanjivaka

The first book of the Panchatantra is 'Mitrabheda', the separation of friends. In it comes a long tale. In a forest there was a lion king named Pingalaka. One day he saw a bull named Sanjivaka who had strayed, and though at first frightened, he came to respect its strength and made it a friend. The lion and the bull lived in harmony and established great peace in the forest.

The king's ministers, two jackals named Damanaka and Karataka, thought their influence had fallen. Damanaka went to the lion and falsely said, 'Sire, Sanjivaka is planning to seize your kingdom.' Then he went to the bull and said, 'The lion is planning to kill you.'

Each began to suspect the other. The lion feared his bull friend might attack him. The bull too prepared to face him in fear. Ikal arose. The two good friends fought each other. In the end the lion killed the bull. Then, realising the truth, it grieved.

After the bull's death the lion saw the error of its act, but it was of no use. By nurturing ikal it lost its one true friend. Damanaka succeeded in his plot; but the peace of the forest was gone.

This tale is the living form of the verse 'ikalirkku ethirsaaidhal aakkam adhanai migalookkin ookkumaam kedu'. When the lion and the bull yielded to each other at the start, the forest flourished. When suspicion and ikal grew, ruin came swiftly.

What causes the loss of friendship is often not an open enemy but one who carries news with evil intent. So when hearing of ikal, the safe course is to speak directly with the friend and learn the truth.

Had the lion done so, it would not have lost its friend and its peace.

To reflect on

When you hear something troubling about a friend, do you first go to them or to others?
