Explanation

The previous couplet told when to eat; this one adds how much. Valluvar concludes that eating in measure after digestion is the way for one who has a body to live long. The word "aravarindhu" carries the sense of measure. The right amount of food varies with each body, age, work and season, and each person must learn his own measure. The elders' rule that half the stomach be for food, a quarter for water and a quarter left empty follows the same line.

The phrase "udambu petraan" has depth too. The body is a gift we have received, and keeping it for a long time is our duty. In Hindu thought a human birth is a rare opportunity, and this body is the instrument for attaining dharma, artha, kama and moksha. In the Bhagavad Gita Krishna tells Arjuna that yoga is not for one who eats too much or not at all, nor for one who sleeps too much or stays awake too much (6.16). Moderate food, moderate recreation and moderate sleep give the yoga that ends sorrow (6.17).

Some commentators take "nedidhu uykkum aaru" as long life, others as a long time in good health. The second sense, that the length of a healthy life matters more than the length of life, is very useful in practice.

A story

The Measured Yoga of the Gita

The sixth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, in the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata, is called the yoga of meditation. On the battlefield of Kurukshetra, when the two armies stood facing each other, Arjuna sank into grief and put down his bow. After Krishna had explained knowledge and the yoga of action, he spoke of the yoga of meditation, which governs the mind. Then Arjuna asked, "Krishna, the mind is restless as the wind and hard to control."

Krishna smiled and said: "Arjuna, the mind is indeed unruly, but by practice and detachment it is restrained. Yoga is not for one who eats too much, nor for one who does not eat at all. It is not for one who sleeps too much, nor for one always awake. For one who is moderate in food and recreation, moderate in action, moderate in sleep and waking, yoga destroys sorrow."

Arjuna listened intently. Even in the middle of a battlefield, this knowledge of measure in caring for the body seemed new to him. Great heroes often choose one of two extremes: an excessively harsh fast, or excessive pleasure. The middle way Krishna described avoided both. He said that this is what brings success. Whether in battle or in life, he stressed, a steady body and mind need this sense of measure first. Arjuna bowed and said, "So shall I practise, Krishna."

These words of the Gita are quoted to this day by physicians and teachers. They mean that food should be given in measure not only for the body's growth but for the mind's clarity. Valluvar's "eat knowing the measure" points to the same middle path. One who avoids both limitless severity and limitless pleasure, and stands in the middle, lives long and well.

Do you eat for the body you have, according to your work and age, or according to habit and the plate in front of you?
