Acting after due Consideration

This chapter teaches that before beginning any undertaking one should weigh the loss, the gain and the final outcome, and take counsel with fit advisers. Valluvar's point is to think first, decide firmly, and then act without wavering.

Introduction

In the Arasiyal section of the Porutpaal, this chapter comes after the choice of fit companions. Having told us in the previous chapter with whom to associate, Valluvar now says how to begin an undertaking together with them. 'Therindhu seyalvagai' means the method of acting with full knowledge. For a king it may be a war, a dam or a trading venture; in a household it may be a wedding, the building of a house or the choice of a child's schooling. The lesson is therefore for everyone who has to decide.

The first verse names three things to be weighed: what will be spent and lost, what will be gained, and what lasting result will follow from the gain. Only after reckoning these should one begin. The second verse speaks of the power of deliberating with chosen and capable counsellors, not alone. Verses three and four warn against risking the capital out of greed and against starting something that is not clear. The fifth says that a war begun without planning amounts to preparing the soil for one's enemy. The sixth sets a balance: doing what should not be done and leaving undone what should be done lead to the same ruin.

The heart of the chapter is the seventh verse: 'Think, then resolve; to say "we shall think after resolving" is a fault.' It has become a proverb on Tamil tongues. Think before acting, be firm while acting: that is its essence. The eighth says that labour done in the wrong way is wasted even if many stand by to help. The ninth says that even in doing good one can err if one does not understand the nature of the receiver. The last verse concludes that one must think and avoid any deed that the world will not accept.

All this is strikingly modern. In a time of quick information and fast technology the pressure to decide at once is great. Goods bought on borrowed money, hasty investments and words written at the height of emotion often turn into regret. To take a day to think is not delay; it is protection.

There is one more subtlety. Thinking must not turn into endless hesitation. Valluvar tells us to think, and in the same breath tells us to resolve. When clear thought, sound counsel and firm action are joined, the deed succeeds, and these ten verses teach how to join them.

Chapter story

Rama's Council on the Shore

From the Ramayana: After Hanuman returned having found Sita, Rama and the army of vanaras reached the southern shore. Before them lay the limitless sea with its towering waves, and beyond it stood Ravana's Lanka. There were hundreds of thousands of vanaras in the army, but all of them stood without any clear idea of how the sea could be crossed.

Many in the army were uneasy; even the bravest had never faced a task of this scale. "How shall we cross such a sea? How strong is Ravana's fortress?" they muttered. Some said they could swim over; others that they could fly. But with hundreds of thousands in the host, there was no answer to how all could cross. Had the leader been hasty, the army itself might have scattered. Rama did not hurry. He called Sugriva, Jambavan, Hanuman and Angada, together with Vibhishana, who had newly taken refuge with him, and held a council. "What is the way across this sea? How can our entire army reach the far shore safely?" he asked. Each of them gave his opinion.

Vibhishana, who knew Lanka, Ravana's strength and the nature of the sea, said, "The right course is to appeal to Varuna, lord of the ocean. If he helps, it will be easy." Rama agreed. He spread darbha grass on the shore and observed a fast of three days, praying to Varuna.

Three days passed and the lord of the sea did not appear. Rama grew angry and took up his bow. As he fitted the arrow, intending to dry up the sea, Varuna came forward trembling. "Lord, it is my nature to be deep, and I cannot change it. But in your army there is Nala, son of Vishvakarma. Any stone he touches floats on water. Build a bridge through him; I will bear it," he said.

Rama turned the arrow aside. Nala and Nila and the whole vanara host began to build the bridge with rocks and trees, each given his share of the work. Tradition says that within five days a bridge a hundred yojanas long had risen over the sea. The entire army crossed to Lanka over it. Tradition adds that a small squirrel, too, wished to help. It dipped itself in the sea, rolled in the sand, and shook the sand onto the bridge, and Rama gently stroked its back. It shows that in even the greatest undertaking the part of the smallest is honoured.

Here counsel, patience and resolve work together. Though his army was vast, Rama did not plunge into the sea in haste. He reasoned with capable people, found a way, and only then committed himself. This bridge stands as the finest form of the verse 'Think, then resolve.'

Key lessons

  • Before beginning, weigh the cost, the gain and the final outcome.
  • Nothing is impossible for one who acts after consulting worthy counsellors.
  • Think first, then resolve; do not say 'we shall think after we have decided'.
  • Doing what should not be done and neglecting what should be done both lead to ruin.
  • Labour without the right method is wasted, however many come to help.
