Explanation

This verse links lack of clarity with disgrace. 'Thelivilathu' means something not clear in the mind: an effort whose purpose, path and consequence are unknown. If one begins such a thing, confusion will arise midway or failure will come, and the world will ridicule him. Valluvar calls this ridicule 'edhappaadu', a fault.

The word 'those who fear' appears again. In the previous chapter we saw that great people fear petty company. Here the wise are said to fear disgrace. That fear acts as a bridle holding them back. 'What will others say?' is sometimes considered a weakness, but here it is a healthy awareness, a caution not to go down a path without clarity and be humbled before one's neighbours.

There are two sides to this. First, fear of disgrace should not become an excuse for delay; once clarity comes, one should begin without fear. Second, people who rush into things they do not understand, out of vanity or a wish to impress others, bring on themselves the very ridicule they dread.

Today we see many projects that were loudly announced and quietly abandoned. A common cause is that the starter lacked clarity. To begin only after clarity is also a way of protecting one's self-respect.

A story

Uttara Kumara's Boast

From the Mahabharata (Virata Parva): During their year of living incognito, the Pandavas hid in the palace of King Virata. Arjuna lived there as Brihannala, the dance teacher of the palace. One day the Kauravas raided the cattle of the Virata kingdom. The king was away fighting on another front. The only one in the city was Prince Uttara Kumara.

Sitting among the women of the inner palace, Uttara Kumara spoke proudly on hearing the news: "If I only had a charioteer, I would defeat the Kaurava army and bring back the cattle!" The women praised him, and his heart swelled with vanity.

Then Draupadi suggested that Brihannala could go as his charioteer. Arjuna drove the chariot. When Uttara Kumara saw the vast army of the Kauravas drawn up before him, and the warriors Bhishma, Drona and Karna among them, his body shook. "I cannot do it! Turn the chariot!" he cried.

He jumped from the chariot and ran. It was Arjuna who ran after him and caught him. "Prince, you boasted of courage among the women and now you flee? You will be disgraced!" he said. Then he seated Uttara Kumara as charioteer and revealed his secret. Arjuna took up his bow and defeated the Kaurava army.

Uttara Kumara was quick to speak of his valour, but had not clearly understood either his own strength or the enemy's. The challenge begun without clarity was about to bring him disgrace, and but for Arjuna it would have ended in that way. It is an example of why those who fear disgrace do not begin anything without clarity.
