Explanation

Three actions come in order here: associating with well-known companions, examining the matter, and thinking it through. 'Therindha inam' means a body of advisers whom one has known for a long time, whose wisdom and conduct have been tested. A person who has decided to undertake something does not rush into the field; he first puts it before them, and they add their wisdom and experience to it.

However sharp one individual's intellect may be, it has limits. One person can see only one side. When others add their views, errors become visible and opportunities appear. A pit that one eye misses becomes obvious to a hundred eyes.

Note also the word 'therndhu', having examined. Valluvar does not say one should consult everybody. He says to choose those who are qualified and take counsel with them. When too many unfit opinions crowd in, clarity falls. So the wise person forms his circle of advisers beforehand.

'There is nothing hard to attain' may sound like exaggeration. Yet if we look at history, many great works were accomplished not by a single genius but by a body that sat together and thought. In families and offices today, real progress comes from sitting quietly and thinking together. The verse also reminds the adviser of his duty: to say honestly what he sees, and not merely what the leader would like to hear.

A story

Counsel Before the Rajasuya

From the Mahabharata (Sabha Parva): Yudhishthira, king of Indraprastha, ruled his land with prosperity and righteousness, and many kingdoms respected him. Then the sage Narada came and spoke of the Rajasuya sacrifice. One who performed it was recognised as an emperor. Yudhishthira wished to perform it.

But he did not announce it at once. He called his brothers Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva, his ministers, the sage Vyasa and the ascetic Dhaumya. "Are we in a position fit for this sacrifice? Is my desire within dharma?" he asked. Each of them gave his view.

Yudhishthira's mind was still not entirely clear. For further counsel, he sent word to Krishna. Krishna came from Dwaraka and heard the whole situation. He pointed out that the obstacle to the Rajasuya was Jarasandha, king of Magadha. "He has imprisoned thousands of kings. Only if he is subdued will the sacrifice proceed without hindrance," he said.

Yudhishthira thought carefully about this advice. He hesitated because war would bring great destruction. Krishna showed a way: Bhima, Arjuna and he himself would go to Magadha disguised as brahmins and challenge Jarasandha to a duel. The idea was that without a great war between armies, the outcome would be settled between single warriors.

So it was done. Bhima defeated Jarasandha and the imprisoned kings were freed. After that the Rajasuya sacrifice was performed in splendour.

Because he took counsel from all, chose the right advisers and examined every consequence, a great undertaking was achieved at small cost. This incident is a witness that nothing is unattainable for one who acts after thinking with a chosen circle.
