Explanation

Ordinarily shame comes for a fault we ourselves commit. Valluvar goes a step further: do we feel shame also for the disgrace of those who are ours, our family, our village, our people? Whoever does so is called the 'dwelling of shame'. 'Uraipathi' is a town where something lives, and the image is that shame has built its home there. Why is this quality higher? Shame at one's own lapse may be self-regarding or out of fear of punishment. But shame at another's lapse is pure moral feeling. It binds us to society. To bow one's head and say 'one of mine behaved so' is the very form of responsibility.

At the same time this does not make one guilty for others' faults. Rather it is the nature of such a heart to try to set things right, to tell them with affection, and, if need be, to offer to make amends. Shame becomes useful to society when it turns to action. A mood of 'it is not my problem' has grown in today's society. The verse offers the opposite view: those who take the disgrace of their circle as their own are the moral foundation of society.

That is why in our tradition the elder of a family takes responsibility first for the faults of the young. That is not humiliation but a way for a lineage to guard its character. In a society without that sense of responsibility everyone tries only to save himself, and the bond of family and village slackens.

A story

Bharata's Shame

This scene is from the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Kaikeyi, claiming her boons from Dasharatha, had Rama sent to the forest and sought to have her son Bharata crowned. Bharata was away at his maternal uncle's house. On hearing the news he hurried home.

He arrived to find his father dead and Rama gone to the forest. When he learned that the cause was his own mother's act, his heart broke. He said to Kaikeyi, "You are not my mother; the blot you have laid on my clan will never be wiped out." He took that disgrace as his own.

No one, neither the people nor the sages, blamed him. Yet he himself bowed his head in shame. "Because of my mother's wrong my brother has gone to the forest. To sit on the throne would only add to the disgrace," he said, and refused the kingship.

He went to Chitrakuta, received Rama's sandals and installed them on the throne. For fourteen years he lived the life of an ascetic at Nandigrama and ruled as Rama's regent. He tried to wash his mother's blot with his own penance.

Seeing his shame even for others' disgrace, the world praised him as the very dwelling of shame. His shame turned into action, which is the highest naan that Valluvar has in mind.

When Bharata met Rama at Chitrakuta he wept as though the fault were his. Rama embraced him with affection and said, "Keeping Father's word is my duty; you are not guilty in this." Yet Bharata's heart was not at peace. His carrying of Rama's sandals was not only a younger brother's love but an act of dharma, making amends himself for his clan's blot. That is why Bharata's name is remembered in our tradition as the emblem of shame.
