Explanation

'Oonaik kuriththa uyir' is life whose aim is the keeping of the body. Seeking food, escaping danger and craving bodily pleasure all depend on the flesh, and every creature lives so. But 'saalbu' is a higher thing: the fullness of noble character. Valluvar says this excellence builds its dwelling in shame. The verse speaks of the relation of body to quality. The body is a house, and naan is a small lamp within. The body needs life; nobility needs naan. A body without life is a corpse; nobility without naan is mere appearance. The depth of the verse is that eminence without inner cleanliness is not worth standing to applaud.

Commentators read 'oonaik kuriththa uyir' as 'life that takes the body as its home', and the sense is unchanged: as the body is the home of life, so shame is the home of excellence. Neither can function without the other. Many of us today take great care of health and looks. That is good. But this verse asks whether we show the same care for inner resolve and shame. The body will in the end be burned; it is character that keeps our memory in the world.

The word 'saalbu' recalls the later chapter on nobility, where the pillars of character are named: love, shame, fellow-feeling, kindly regard and truthfulness. Shame is one of them, and that is the background of this verse.

A story

Lakshmana and the Anklets

This scene comes from the Kishkindha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. When Ravana carried Sita away, she dropped some of her ornaments, and the vanaras gathered them. Later, when Rama and Lakshmana met Sugriva, he showed those jewels to Rama.

Rama took them in his hands and his eyes filled with tears. "Lakshmana, see whether these are Sita's," he said. Lakshmana looked at the ornaments, then said quietly: "Brother, I do not know this earring or this necklace. But these anklets I know well, for I bow daily at my sister-in-law's feet."

In this one remark Lakshmana's whole character shows. Living for months beside Sita in the forest, he had never lifted his eyes to study her face or her jewels. Because he always bowed at her feet, only the ornaments of her feet were familiar to him.

The Ramayana honours this moment as a sign of Lakshmana's discipline. It was not that he had no bodily desires, but that his character held them in check and set respect and modesty first. That is saalbu.

Valluvar says nobility makes its dwelling in shame. Lakshmana's words are a living proof: one who places character and modesty above bodily appetite is a truly noble person.

Tamil tradition honours this moment greatly. Lakshmana's remark stays in the memory of everyone who has studied the epic. His attitude of treating his brother's wife as a mother and keeping his gaze at her feet is an enduring example of family discipline. Even in his grief at being parted from Sita, Rama would have felt proud of his brother's words, our tradition understands.
