Explanation

In this verse dharma feels like a person: it blushes. If a man who does wrong does not blush, others who see the deed will blush for him, that much is obvious. But Valluvar goes further and says dharma itself will blush. Dharma is the foundational order of the world, and when one who should live by it insults it, that very order bows its head. There is a deep truth here: shamelessness is not only an individual's fault; it affects the moral fabric of a society. If a man, after doing wrong, is ashamed, it means he still honours that dharma. If he is not ashamed, he denies the value of dharma itself. That is why dharma blushes for him.

In the Mahabharata, during the episode in the Kaurava assembly, many elders sat silent. Our elders say that by that silence they too made dharma blush. Not only not blushing for a wrong, but watching a wrong without wincing also shames dharma. Today people often complain that wrongs are done openly in public life and on social media and no one feels shame. In that climate this verse knocks at the heart: when we do not blush, we lower not only our act but the dharma we belong to.

The depth of the verse lies in the phrase 'dharma blushes'. Shame is the voice of dharma within us. If it does not sound, dharma's voice itself is suppressed. So not only the doer of the wrong but also the one who let it be done and the one who stayed silent have a share in it.

A story

The Voice of Vikarna

This scene is from the Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata. At the game of dice Yudhishthira lost his kingdom, his brothers and himself. Then he staked Draupadi too. In the Kaurava assembly an attempt was made to dishonour her. Present in that hall were many elders: Bhishma, Drona, Kripa and Dhritarashtra.

Draupadi asked in the assembly: "Can a man who first lost himself have the right to stake me?" To answer this was the duty of the elders versed in dharma. But they hesitated. Some said the subtlety of dharma was too complex and fell silent.

Then Vikarna, one of Duryodhana's brothers, stood up. "This act is against dharma. Gambling is a vice. Draupadi has not been won. Elders, why this silence?" he called. He was a Kaurava, of the same clan. Yet he felt shame for his clan's wrong.

Karna rebuked him: "You are a boy; why do you speak where the elders do not?" Still Vikarna did not change his stand. In an assembly full of shameless men, because one man felt shame, dharma for a moment lifted its head.

The Mahabharata has recorded Vikarna's voice. When the assembly did not blush, dharma itself blushed; and because one man voiced that shame, a little of dharma's honour was kept. Valluvar's verse reads as if it were written looking at this scene.
