Explanation

This verse compares two kinds of loss. The first is failing the code of one's family: neglecting the family customs, rituals, modes of worship and practices laid down by elders. That brings disrepute to the lineage and 'burns' the lineage. The second is shamelessness, which burns not just the lineage but every good a man has.

Commentators read the word 'kolgai' differently: some as the family's discipline and ritual, some as moral principles. In either case it refers to a family's inherited cultural wealth. To fail in it is lamentable, but Valluvar judges shamelessness to be worse. Why? Because a man who breaks a family code, if he still has shame, can recognise his fault and mend. If he has no shame at all, even the door of correction is shut. Shame is the basic instrument of the heart's amendment. For one who has lost it there is no way to do good.

For our lives the meaning is plain. Dropping some family rituals may be a forgivable lapse; but doing wrong and then living without any shame destroys all the good that family has built. As long as shame is not lost, correction is possible. The verse is not only a warning but also a hope. It says by implication that as long as shame is alive any fault can be mended. So when a younger member of a family errs, the elder's task is less to scold than to protect the sense of shame in them.

A story

The Nattuvanar Family

In Thanjavur there was a famous family of nattuvanars in the art of Bharatanatyam. The family had a tradition handed down through generations: every year on Ayudha Puja they worshipped the ankle-bells, fell at the guru's feet for blessing, and only then admitted new students.

Two grandsons of the family were Shankaran and Kumaran. Shankaran had run after name and fame from his youth. One year, because a big programme was on in the city on Ayudha Puja, he skipped the ankle-bell puja. The elders were saddened. "The custom is broken, but he will realise it," they said.

Shankaran did indeed realise. The next year he came forward on his own, performed the puja and asked the guru's pardon. His lapse was a shadow on the family name for a little while, but his shame removed it.

Kumaran was of another sort. Though his talent was modest, before his arangetram he showed forged certificates saying he had trained under a great guru. When a senior artist questioned him directly, he lied again without flinching. "Who is going to find out?" he said.

In the end the truth came out. His false fame collapsed, and the good dance he had really learned became useless too. No one trusted him. Seeing that he felt no shame, the old man said: "If the ankle-bell puja is missed, the lineage suffers; if shame is missed, the art itself is ruined."

Valluvar's verse became a saying in that house. The one who broke custom could mend; the one who lost shame lost the very way to mend.

That evening the old man called his grandsons and gave a small counsel: "If you do wrong, grieve; if you grieve, mend. If there is no grief, no guru can lift you." Shankaran wrote those words on his heart. He repeated them to his students in later years. Kumaran lost his name and left the town.
