Explanation

From this verse the heroine's voice begins. She tried to hide her love, but it breaks out beyond her control. The metaphor is that desire behaves like a separate being. Nirai is a woman's self-restraint and ali is compassion. Without honouring either, without thinking "She is steadfast, let me pity her," desire breaks the concealment in its own way and stands in the public assembly. The mandram is the common place of the town; if it comes there, everyone will know.

In this verse the heroine's distress is laid upon herself. She admits that her self-control has been defeated. Yet in speaking as though accusing her feeling, she shows that it stands like a separate life and opposes her. This is a picture of the struggle between inner and outer. The words marai irandhu beautifully point to a state that has crossed the limit of hiding.

In our lives too, feelings we meant to hide emerge at an unexpected time, whether anger, love or sorrow. To suppress it completely is a burden for the mind. It is better to let it out at times, in a safe place. Valluvar does not show the heroine's state as a fault but as a human trait.

A story

Devayani's Hidden Love

The Adi Parva of the Mahabharata contains the story of Kacha and Devayani. Shukracharya, the guru of the asuras, knew the sanjivani mantra that conquers death. Kacha, son of Brihaspati, the guru of the gods, joined Shukracharya as a disciple to learn that mantra. Devayani, the guru's daughter, came to know Kacha. Seeing his goodness and humility, her heart loved him.

The asuras killed Kacha several times. Each time Devayani pleaded with her father and revived him by that mantra. At last Kacha completed learning the mantra. His task done, he came to take leave and return to the world of the gods. Then Devayani told her love openly. "Marry me," she begged. Until then she had hidden her love; at the moment of parting it crossed concealment and came out.

Kacha refused. "You are my guru's daughter, like a sister to me, so I cannot marry you," he said. In anger Devayani cursed him, and Kacha cursed her in return, tradition says. Love and anger mingled in one moment.

The story shows how unexpectedly hidden love can emerge. Devayani hid her love for a long time, but when loss came near it crossed her control. Although she had the composure to pity others, desire did not heed it.

Her condition arouses compassion, and at the same time it provokes thought about the right time and place for expressing feeling.
