Reserve Overcome

Niraiyazhidhal

This chapter shows how the reserve and self-command that belong to a woman's dignity break down before the strength of love. Through the heroine's candid admissions, Valluvar tells beautifully how the axe of desire shatters the bolt of modesty.

Introduction

This chapter, Niraiyazhidhal, belongs to the Karpiyal of the Kamathuppaal. 'Nirai' is a prized quality in the Tamil akam tradition. It stands for the restraint set in a woman's heart, the firmness that keeps her feelings in check, and the culture of concealing what should be concealed. Along with the womanly qualities of modesty, fear, tenderness and delicacy, nirai was honoured as part of a woman's dignity. This chapter sings of such nirai being destroyed by the excess of love. In the previous chapter the heroine spoke with her heart; here she herself admits how powerful that heart is.

The special feature of the chapter is the heroine's honest voice. She does not hide her defeat. She says openly, 'I took pride in my restraint; but love has torn all my concealment and set me in the public square.' With humour and with pain she says, 'I try to hide my desire, but it comes out of itself like a sneeze.' In these confessions there is embarrassment and also a kind of release. We see the courage to tell the truth without deceiving oneself.

The ten verses have a progressive development. In the first, the general truth that the axe of desire breaks the bolt of modesty. In the second, third and fourth, love reveals itself at night, during an attempt to conceal, and in the public assembly. In the fifth and sixth, the self-respect that refuses to follow one who has left, and the way the sickness of love destroys it. In the seventh and eighth, that modesty vanishes when the beloved shows affection, and that his gentle speech breaks the defence of womanhood. In the ninth and tenth, the heart that went to sulk goes instead to embrace, and the heart melts like fat in fire. Thus love breaks one fortress after another and wins completely.

What does the chapter say to today's life? That we need balance between holding feelings in and expressing them. If we suppress everything the heart seethes; if we let it out without restraint, relationships break. The heroine's experience shows us both. It also teaches us not to blame someone for a quality that has broken, but to understand the strength of the feeling they went through. In love it is not restraint that wins but truth, and one who speaks the truth frees oneself.

Chapter story

The Balcony at Mithila and Rama's Glance

This is the story of the Mithilaik Kaatchi Padalam in the Bala Kandam of the Tamil epic Ramavataram composed by Kamban. This scene is not in Valmiki's Ramayana; the Tamil poet Kamban created it with the beauty of his imagination.

Rama and Lakshmana reached the city of Mithila with the sage Vishvamitra. King Janaka's palace was splendidly decorated. The king had arranged a swayamvara. He had announced that he would give his daughter Sita in marriage to the one who could bend Shiva's bow and string it. Crowds of people had gathered all through the city. Along the streets, mansions stood in rows.

Sita stood with her friends on the balcony of her palace, looking at the street. She was full of youth and beauty, and at the same time was modest and reserved. The nirai, the reserve of a royal woman, was complete in her. She was not used to looking directly at anyone. In the street she saw two young men walking with Vishvamitra. One of them was dark as a rain cloud and had the stately walk of a lion.

At that moment Rama also looked up. Their eyes met. Kamban sums up the event in a famous line meaning 'The noble one looked, and she too looked.' In that look both forgot themselves. The guarding door of Sita's nirai loosened in a single glance. She had never before looked on anyone in that way. Her modesty told her to turn away; her heart held her fast. Her friends sensed her state and gathered round her.

From that day the two were bound in mind. The next day, in the swayamvara hall, Rama bent and broke Shiva's bow, the poet sings. The whole hall was amazed. Janaka rejoiced. Sita and Rama were wed.

In this scene the breaking of Sita's nirai is shown without any fault, as the natural birth of true love. Kamban does not belittle her modesty; he sings of it as a fine quality. Yet he shows that when love is born, that quality gives it way.

Valluvar's message in this chapter is the same. When the axe of desire breaks the door of modesty, it is not a fault but a proof of the strength of love. One who respects that strength will not look down on it.

Even today we see in the young the shyness of a first glance and the clarity that comes later. It is the duty of elders to meet their feelings with respect, and to guide them to grow it with discipline.

Key lessons

  • Restraint and modesty are fine qualities, but no one can wholly hide the strength of love.
  • The courage to admit one's feelings honestly sets oneself free.
  • A loved one's gentle words and kindness easily melt the walls of the heart, so we must handle words with care.
  • In the struggle of a heart that follows one who left, we need a balance that honours both self-respect and love.
  • Sulking and uniting are the nature of the heart, and should be understood with compassion.
