Explanation

This is a verse of command. Two negative commands, 'maravarka' and 'thuravarka', tell us to guard two kinds of friendship. The first is friendship with the faultless, people free of blemish. The second is friendship with those who stood by us in time of trouble.

'Maasatraar' are those without stain of mind. Their friendship lifts us. To forget them is our own loss. As time passes we may forget them among new friends. So Valluvar warns 'maravarka', do not forget.

Those who stood by us in trouble he calls 'thuppaayaar'. 'Thuppu' is strength, support. To abandon those who were our strength once good days arrive is to kill gratitude. 'Thuravarka' prevents that withdrawal.

The two commands differ. Forgetting happens through neglect; abandoning is a knowing withdrawal. Valluvar forbids both: no neglect, no open desertion.

Commentators see two kinds of friends here. Some commentators take the faultless as the good and see the helpers in trouble as a separate group. Others take both as one class.

It applies simply to our lives: a classmate, one who lent money in hard times, one who stayed in illness, one who gave courage when a job was lost. We must not forget them in our success.

In the Hindu tradition the best example is Karna. Duryodhana gave him the kingdom of Anga and made him a friend. When Krishna and Kunti tried to change him at the crisis of war, he did not leave that friendship.

Valluvar does not speak of blind friendship, though. He begins with 'faultless' friendship. We may take it that the debt of friendship must stay within the limits of dharma.

A story

Karna's Loyalty to Duryodhana

In the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata comes the scene of Karna's introduction. The princes, Pandavas and Kauravas, had gathered in the arena at Hastinapura to show their skill in arms. Arjuna amazed everyone with his archery. Then a young man entered and said he could show the same skill. He was Karna.

Kripa asked him for his lineage, arguing that only those of royal blood could compete with Arjuna. Karna bowed his head, as his father was a charioteer. At that moment it was Duryodhana who stood by him. He at once crowned him king of Anga, saying in substance that a hero is not measured by birth.

From that day Karna was Duryodhana's friend and support. He knew many of Duryodhana's wrongs. He even had a share in the insult to Draupadi in the assembly. Yet he did not abandon the friend who had not abandoned him.

Before the war, Krishna met Karna and told him the truth of his birth: "You are the eldest son of Kunti; the Pandavas are your brothers; you can be king." Karna refused. The Mahabharata gives his answer to the effect that he would not betray Duryodhana, who had trusted him and raised him.

Kunti too met him and called him to her side. Karna honoured her, but though he accepted her as mother, he did not leave his friendship. He promised her he would not kill her other four sons, apart from Arjuna.

This story shows one side of verse 106: not forsaking the friend who stood by him in his time of affliction, that is, in humiliation. Karna's gratitude is much praised.

But the Mahabharata does not hide the other side. The friendship was with one not on the path of dharma, and led Karna to destruction. We may think that this is why Valluvar put the word 'faultless' first.
