Explanation

This verse says two sides of one thought with a play of words. 'Nandri marappadhu nandru andru': forgetting a kindness is not good. 'Nandru alladhu andre marappadhu nandru': what is not good, a wrong, to forget it that very day is good.

By nature people keep memory the wrong way. We forget the good done to us and keep the wrong for long. Valluvar reverses it: keep the good in mind and let go of the wrong.

The word 'andre', that very day, is notable. A wrong should not be carried to the next day but forgotten the same day. Every day that hatred stays in the mind it burns us.

We should not misread this. Forgetting a wrong is not accepting injustice. One may do what law and dharma require. But to remove bitterness and the wish for revenge is what forgetting means.

Most commentators take 'nandralladhu' as wrong. Some stretch it to small acts that are not good. Either way the meaning is the same: a forgiving mind.

In the Ramayana Rama embodies this. Though Kaikeyi was the cause of his going to the forest, he spoke no blame of her. He always honoured her as mother.

In life, instead of brooding on a wrong someone did us, if we recall some good the same person did earlier, the mind lightens. That lightness leads to the next verse.

A story

Rama's Respect for Kaikeyi

In the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana Rama's mind shows in many places. On the eve of his coronation, Kaikeyi asked for two boons: the crown for Bharata and fourteen years of forest exile for Rama. Dasharatha fell in a swoon. Rama alone stood calm.

Rama answered Kaikeyi in substance: "Mother, to fulfil my father's word is my duty; I have no sorrow in it." What Kaikeyi did was the greatest loss of his life, yet he did not blame her. The same day he bowed at her feet and left.

During the fourteen years in the forest, Bharata one day came to Chitrakuta with the army. He came to take Rama back to Ayodhya. The three mothers came with him. Kaikeyi stood with bowed head in shame.

The Ramayana also tells of the respect Rama showed her. He saluted all his mothers alike. There was no harshness toward Kaikeyi. Tradition says he did not blame her for her act, but remembered how lovingly she had raised him in his youth.

Valmiki shows that Kaikeyi had loved Rama as her own son in childhood. Before Manthara's words changed her mind, she had rejoiced at the news of Rama's coronation. Rama held those good memories in his heart.

This story shows both halves of verse 108. Rama did not forget Kaikeyi's love, her kindness. And he forgot her harm the very day. There was no hatred in his mind.

That is why, when he later sat as king in Ayodhya, all the mothers could live in peace. A forgiving mind protects a family and a country.

We too meet such situations in family, friendship and office. To forget at once the harm someone did and keep in mind the good they did gives us peace.

What wrong am I still carrying that I could have set down the day it was done?
