Explanation

This verse makes a subtle point. The greatness of a help does not depend on the help's size; it depends on the worth of the one who receives it. 'Saalpu' is fullness of good character and culture.

It means that a good person takes even a small help as great and returns it with thanks. A person without worth, though he receives a great help, thinks it small and forgets. So the same help has different value in different people.

This continues the previous verse. Verse 104 spoke of those who know the benefit; here the verse speaks of the worth that underlies such knowing. Gratitude does not come from outside; it comes from the quality of the receiver's heart.

Commentators take 'varaiththu' as measure or boundary. A help has no size of its own; the receiver's worth is its limit. A small help given to a great person grows great.

Two lessons follow. When we help, we may ask whether the person is worthy; help to the worthy is never wasted. And if we make ourselves worthy, the helps that reach us will grow great in us.

Worth does not come from learning or wealth. It comes from humility, honesty, gratitude and compassion. So this verse calls us to grow our character.

The squirrel in the Ramayana tradition is a fitting example. Its help was very small. Yet because of the worth of Rama who received it, it became a memory that lasts for ever.

A story

Rama and the Squirrel

This is a popular tradition found in Tamil Nadu and many parts of India, not in Valmiki's Ramayana. Rama's army was building a bridge over the sea to reach Lanka. The vanaras carried great rocks and trees and threw them into the sea. Seeing the work, a tiny squirrel wished to help too.

How could a squirrel lift a rock? It wetted itself in the sea, rolled in the sand, went onto the bridge and shook the sand off its body. It did this again and again, giving what its small body could.

The vanaras did not notice it. Some versions say one vanara, annoyed, told it to move away and pushed it off. The squirrel fell.

Rama noticed. He took the squirrel in his hand and stroked its back lovingly. The tradition says he praised it: "Your help is small in this great work, but your heart is great." Where his fingers touched, three lines are believed to have appeared on the squirrel's back.

This story fits verse 105. The squirrel's help was small in size and hardly visible in the work of the bridge. But its worth lay not in the size of the help but in the nobility of Rama who received it. He did not dismiss it as small.

Two views are before us. The vanaras' view: only the big counts as help. Rama's view: whatever is done with love is help. By his own worth Rama made the squirrel's small act known to the world.

We too receive small helps from many people. The habit of noticing them, thanking and praising gives us worth. Let us value even a help from one smaller than ourselves, as Rama did.

When telling this to children, it is customary to show the stripes on the squirrel's back and say, "No help is small." It teaches gratitude and humility together.

To reflect on

Do I notice the small helpers around me, or only the large ones?
