Explanation

This verse says that the time of a help matters more than its size. 'Kaalaththinaal seydha nandri' is a help done at the moment when it is most needed. Though small, its worth is greater than the world.

A morsel of rice given to the hungry is dearer than a thousand morsels at a feast. A cup of water to someone parched is a great gift of life to him. Timeliness raises the worth of a help.

'Gnaalaththin maanap peridhu' may sound like exaggeration. But in the mind of the receiver it is the true measure. One who gives a hand when a person's life stumbles in a moment becomes the saviour of that person's whole world.

Commentators generally take 'kaalaththinaal' as 'in the time of distress'. Some stretch it to 'even before the needy ask'. Both fit the spirit of the verse.

The verse teaches the giver as well. If you wish to help, do not delay. To put it off for later reduces its worth. A small act at the right moment is the great help.

It teaches the receiver too. He should not look at how big the help was, but remember when it came. That memory deepens gratitude.

In the Hindu tradition the rescue of Gajendra is a beautiful example. When the elephant called in the last moment, Vishnu came at once and saved him. The moment of the help is the very life of the help.

In our own lives, medical aid in an emergency, guidance, comfort, a loan or a gift of blood, if it comes at once, stays in memory for life. Our gratitude to those who gave it should be equally deep.

A story

Vishnu Rescues Gajendra

The story of Gajendra Moksha comes in the eighth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana. Near the Trikuta mountain lay a great lake. Gajendra, the chief of elephants, lived there with his herd. One day, in the heat of the sun, he went into the lake to drink and play.

Suddenly a crocodile seized his leg. Gajendra was very strong, but the crocodile in its own water held him fast. The Purana says they struggled for a very long time. The other elephants, his kin, stood on the bank watching, unable to save him.

His strength faded. In that state, remembering a former birth, he began to call upon the Lord. He took a lotus from the lake, raised his trunk, and offered it to the one who is the support of all. "O primal source," he cried.

At that very moment Vishnu came riding Garuda. That he came at the last hour, on hearing the call, is the life of the story. There was no delay. With his discus he struck the crocodile and freed Gajendra. The Purana says that the crocodile too was freed of a curse and became a gandharva.

We may set this scene beside verse 102. The help was given 'in time'. It came in the last minute when Gajendra needed it. That is why it becomes greater than the world. A day earlier or a moment later and its meaning would have changed.

We too have received last-hour help in our lives. The one who steadied a broken-down vehicle on the road, the neighbour who went with us to hospital at midnight, are the Vishnus of our Gajendra Moksha.

The lesson is this: help has its proper time. One who gives it in time is great; one who remembers it with thanks is good.

To reflect on

Who reached me at the last moment when I was sinking, and when did I last remember them?
