Mahabharata, Anushasana ParvaBhishma's Teaching on Non-Violence
From the Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva. After the Kurukshetra war, Yudhishthira asked Bhishma, lying on his bed of arrows, about the subtleties of dharma. One question was: 'What is the highest of all virtues?'
Bhishma replied: 'Non-violence is the highest dharma; it is the highest austerity and the highest gift. One who seeks to fatten his own flesh with the flesh of others finds peace nowhere. To every creature, its own life is dear.'
Coming from a warrior who had spent his life on the battlefield, this teaching makes the value of non-violence all the deeper.
