Explanation

Keep away from the houses of courtesans, says Avvaiyar. Going to such places destroys wealth, good name and family.

Today its meaning is wider still: wisdom lies in keeping away from any place that bewitches us and wears away our time, wealth and relationships.

Divya Suri Charitam (life of Thondaradippodi Alvar)

The Fall and Rise of Vipranarayana

From the life of Thondaradippodi Alvar. Vipranarayana was a pure devotee who wove garlands for Lord Ranganatha at Srirangam. One day a dancer named Devadevi resolved to seduce him and joined his garden as a servant.

In time Vipranarayana became infatuated with her, forgot his service and lost all his wealth to her. When his money ran out, her door was shut to him. He wandered in misery and even bore the blame for stealing a temple vessel.

By the Lord's grace the truth came out and he was freed. Seeing his fall, he repented deeply and, wishing to be the dust beneath the feet of devotees, returned to the Lord's service under the name Thondaradippodi, 'dust of the devotees' feet'.

To reflect on

Could you stay away this week from a place that wastes your time and attention?
