Explanation

Place a king and a flawlessly learned person on the scales, says Avvaiyar, and the learned one weighs more. The reason is simple: a king is honoured only within the borders of his own land; beyond them he is a stranger. The learned are honoured wherever they go, because their learning travels with them.

Note the words 'learned without flaw'. Not someone who merely holds a title, but one who has studied deeply and truly and lives by it. That kind of learning is honoured across every border.

Tamil doctors, engineers and teachers working around the world today are living proof of this verse. Position can be lost and wealth can be lost; learning is the wealth no one can take, and it is valid everywhere.

From the Mahabharata (Adi Parva)

Drona and Drupada

From the Mahabharata. In their youth Drona and Drupada, prince of Panchala, studied in the same hermitage. 'When I am king, I will give you half my kingdom,' Drupada had said.

Later Drupada became king. Drona, though outstanding in learning, was so poor he could not buy milk for his son Ashvatthama. Trusting their old friendship, he went to Drupada's court. But Drupada insulted him: 'A king and a poor Brahmin cannot be friends.'

Drona went to Hastinapura. There the Kaurava and Pandava princes were playing when their ball fell into a well. Drona made arrows of grass blades, joined one to the next, and drew the ball out. When Bhishma heard of his skill, he welcomed Drona with great honour and made him teacher to the princes of the Kuru line.

Drupada, a king only in his own land, insulted a scholar; the scholar received royal honour even in a foreign land. The learned are greater than kings.
