From the Mahabharata (Adi Parva)The Devotion of Upamanyu
From the Mahabharata. Upamanyu was a student in the gurukula of the sage Ayoda Dhaumya, who set him to herd the cattle. One day the teacher asked, "You look well fed; how do you eat?" "I live on alms," said Upamanyu. "What you receive in alms should first be offered to your teacher," said the guru, and Upamanyu did so.
Then he begged a second round for himself, and his teacher forbade that too. He drank the cows' milk; "Not without permission," said the guru. He ate the froth that spilled from the calves' mouths; "The calves will drink less for your sake," said the guru, and forbade that as well. Each time Upamanyu accepted humbly.
One day, unable to bear his hunger, he ate the leaves of the arka plant. Their poison blinded him, and stumbling about, he fell into a well. His teacher came searching, learned what had happened, and said, "Pray to the Ashvins, the physicians of the gods." Upamanyu praised them with Vedic hymns. The Ashvins appeared and gave him a cake to eat. "I will not eat it without first offering it to my teacher," said Upamanyu.
Delighted by his devotion, the Ashvins restored his sight. His teacher blessed him: "All the Vedas and sacred texts will shine forth in you of their own accord."
To learn, even by begging, is very sweet; and learning gained in humility comes to its fullness.
