Meaning

O you whose gentle words are sweet as milk, honey and syrup! When cruel Death, in fury, hurls his spear at me, come out and stand before me, with the feet that Vishnu, Brahma, the Vedas and the gods searched for and could not find, and with your bangled hand.

Explanation

The previous verse ended 'pearl garland' (maalaiyume); this begins 'Vishnu' (Maal). Bhattar thinks of the hour of death, and prays that at the moment Yama hurls his spear, the Mother will come and stand before him.

The contrast is lovely: the same feet that Vishnu and Brahma searched for and could not find should come and stand before the deathbed of a simple devotee. The bangle on her hand reminds us that she is a tender mother, and her words are sweet as milk, honey and syrup.

Linga Purana (the story of King Shveta)

The Lord Who Stopped Death for King Shveta

From the Linga Purana. Shveta was a king and a great devotee of Shiva. In his old age he gave up his kingdom and sat in a mountain cave before a Shiva lingam, worshipping without pause. When his span of life ended, Kala, Death, came with his noose and spear to take him.

Shveta was not afraid. 'The Lord is in this lingam; he will protect me,' he said. Kala laughed, 'Will this stone save you?' and cast his noose. At that very moment the Lord burst forth from the lingam with Uma, stopped Death and struck him down. Shveta reached the shelter of the Lord's feet.

At the moment Death hurled his weapon, the Lord 'came out and stood'. That is just what Bhattar asks of the Mother: 'When cruel Death hurls his spear at me, come out and stand before me.'
