Kanda Puranam and the tradition of the Kanda Sashti fast (Thiruchendur)The Six-Day Fast and the Defeat of Sooran
From the Kanda Puranam and the Kanda Sashti tradition. To fight Sooran, Murugan camped with his army on the seashore at Thiruchendur. The war ran for six days, from the first day of the waxing moon in the month of Aippasi. For all six days the gods and sages fasted and prayed for Murugan's victory.
On the sixth day, Sashti, when all his magic had failed, Sooran stood in the middle of the sea as a gigantic mango tree. Murugan hurled the vel his Mother had given him, and it split the tree in two. Sooran's pride was destroyed and he became Murugan's own, as peacock and rooster. The gods showered flowers and were freed from their prison. The next day Indra gave his daughter Deivayanai to Murugan in marriage at Thiruparankundram.
In memory of that day, the six-day Kanda Sashti fast is still kept in the month of Aippasi. On the sixth day the festival of Soorasamharam is held on the beach at Thiruchendur, and Murugan temples everywhere, Thiruporur among them, celebrate it. People read the Tamil proverb 'What is in the pot (satti) comes up in the ladle (agappai)' as 'Keep the Sashti fast and a child will come to the womb', expressing the faith that the fast brings the blessing of a child.
