Explanation

In the first line Murugan is called 'the son of Ganga Bhagirathi'. Because Ganga carried the sparks from Shiva's third eye and laid them in the Saravana pool, Murugan is called Gangeya, son of Ganga. In the seventh line the same Murugan is 'the treasure born of Uma'. Naming two mothers in one verse recalls the beauty of the story of his birth.

'You play on every hill' refers to the old tradition of kundruthoradal, 'dancing on every hill'. The Thirumurugatruppadai sings of Murugan at play on all the hills, and it is an old belief in Tamil Nadu that wherever there is a hill, there is Murugan.

The middle of the verse asks for the blessings of family life: children, good fortune, flourishing families, healing from illness. Families in Tamil Nadu still pray to Murugan for the gift of a child. The child whose own birth was a boon to the gods brings the treasure of children into his devotees' homes too.

Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda (the birth of Kumara)

The Child Carried by Ganga

From the Bala Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. As the sage Vishvamitra walked along the banks of the Ganga with the young Rama and Lakshmana, he told them stories of the river's glory. One of them was the birth of Kumara.

The gods begged Shiva for a commander who could defeat the asuras. Agni, the god of fire, first carried Shiva's radiance, but he could not bear its heat and gave it to Ganga. Ganga too could not hold that light for long, and she laid it in a forest of reeds at the foot of the Himalayas. There a child shining like gold was born.

The six Krittika maidens came to nurse the child. So that he could drink from all six, he appeared with six faces. So he was called Kartikeya and Shanmukha; Gangeya, because Ganga carried him; and Saravanabhava, born in the reed forest. Vishvamitra ended the story by saying: 'Whoever hears this tale will be blessed with long life and children.' That blessing fits this verse's prayer for children.

To reflect on

Many mothers held Murugan with love: Ganga, the Krittikas, Uma. Among those who helped raise you, whom should you remember with gratitude today?
