Explanation

The verse begins with a poor devotee's distress; the poet calls himself 'a poor servant, wilting and struggling'. Vaiyapuri is an old name for Palani. The peacock that carries the Kumara of the Palani hill is 'the emerald peacock', with a tail of deep emerald green.

The third line is lovely: the peacock dances on the tongues of the poets who sing and study. When words come dancing of their own accord in a song about Murugan, says the poet, that is the peacock's grace. This prepares the way for the story of Nakkeerar in the sixth line.

Nakkeerar was a Sangam poet who sang the Thirumurugatruppadai, the first of the Ten Idylls (Pattuppattu). When a demon shut him in a mountain cave, he sang that poem, and Murugan split the mountain with his vel and set him free. The faith of this verse is that the peacock of the Lord who saved that poet still protects the poets who sing to him.

Tamil tradition about the Thirumurugatruppadai

Nakkeerar Rescued from the Cave

From the Tamil tradition about the Thirumurugatruppadai. One day Nakkeerar, a poet of the Madurai Sangam, sat by a pond near Thiruparankundram, performing worship to Shiva. A leaf fell so that half of it lay in the water and half on the bank. The half in the water turned into a fish and the half on land into a bird, and they began pulling against each other. Watching this wonder, Nakkeerar broke off his worship.

A demon named Karkimukhi, who waited to seize anyone who broke off their worship, caught Nakkeerar and shut him in a mountain cave. Nine hundred and ninety-nine people were already imprisoned there. The demon said that when it had a thousand, it would eat them all. The others wept and wailed.

Nakkeerar did not lose heart. He called on Murugan by singing the Thirumurugatruppadai, which begins 'Ulagam uvappa valaneerbu thiritharu', 'The sun that circles the world to its delight'. As the song ended, Murugan sent his vel. It split the mountain and destroyed the demon, and Nakkeerar and all thousand captives were set free. That is why people still believe that Murugan stands by those who recite the Thirumurugatruppadai with love.

To reflect on

While the others wept, Nakkeerar sang. When you are trapped in a hard place, what keeps you steady inside?
