Explanation

This verse sets a grand festival of music and dance before our eyes. Tradition says that Nandi beats the drum for Shiva's dance of bliss. Here the same Nandi beats the drum for the peacock of Murugan, and Narada plays his veena. Those who play for the father's dance now play for the son's peacock.

The third and fourth lines call in the great saints of Tamil Shaivism: Sundarar, Sambandar and Appar, who sang the Thevaram, and Manikkavasagar, who sang the Thiruvasagam. The three thousand priests of Thillai, who serve Nataraja at Chidambaram, praise the peacock too. Since Thirugnanasambandar is revered as a form of Murugan himself, his presence here is fitting.

In the sixth line the sun and moon stand on either side of the peacock like temple lamps. Then in the seventh, in the middle of this vast scene, the poet speaks of his own experience: 'You removed the sorrow from my mind and took me as your own.'

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Thirugnanasambandar

The Child Who Drank the Milk of Wisdom

From the Periya Puranam. In Sirkazhi there lived a brahmin named Sivapada Hridayar. One morning he went to bathe in the temple tank and took along his three-year-old son, seating him on the steps.

When his father dived under the water and disappeared from sight, the child looked up at the temple tower and cried, 'Amma! Appa!' Hearing that cry, Shiva and Parvati appeared on their bull. The Mother drew her own milk into a golden cup, mixed it with divine wisdom, and fed the child.

When the father came out of the water and saw milk on the child's lips, he asked angrily, 'Who gave you milk?' The child pointed to the sky and sang the first hymn of the Thevaram, beginning 'Thodudaiya seviyan', 'He who wears an earring'. From that day he was called Thirugnanasambandar, 'the one bound to divine wisdom'. Devotees revere this child who drank the Mother's milk as a form of Murugan himself, and Arunagirinathar sings of him that way in his Thiruppugazh.

To reflect on

In the middle of a vast vision, the poet speaks of his own small experience: 'You took away my sorrow.' Do you remember a moment when you felt grace personally, in your own life?
