Explanation

The first line holds four denials: 'mariyaa', who never dies; 'unaraa', who has nothing new to learn, since he already knows all; 'maravaa', who never forgets; 'udhiyaa', who is never born. Death, learning, forgetting and birth belong to living beings; none of them touches Shiva. Murugan is the son of that Pure One, whom Brahma and Vishnu searched for and could not find, as in the story of the pillar of fire.

The second half is a chant of names all ending in the long 'aa': adhikaa, anagaa, abhayaa, amaraa. Recited aloud, it rings like a mantra. Each name is a quality: supreme, sinless, giver of fearlessness, deathless.

The verse closes with 'soora bhayankaranae', terror of Sooran. Notice the pairing: to devotees he is 'abhaya', the one who removes fear; to the asura he is 'bhayankara', the one who causes fear. The same Lord shows two faces, depending on who stands before him.

Kanda Puranam, the marriage of Devayanai, Thiruparankundram tradition

Indra's Gift of His Daughter

From the Kanda Puranam. When Sooran fell, the imprisoned devas were set free, and Amaravati, the city of the gods, so long in the hands of the asuras, was returned to Indra. To thank Murugan for saving his world, Indra wished to give him his daughter Devayanai in marriage.

Tradition says the wedding took place at Thiruparankundram near Madurai, now the first of Murugan's six sacred abodes. All the devas gathered; Brahma conducted the sacred fire; and it is said that Vishnu himself gave away the bride. From that day Murugan has also been called Devasenapati, the commander of the army of the gods, and Devayanai stands at his side.

When the poet calls Murugan 'pathi kaavala', guardian of the city, and 'terror of Sooran', he is remembering this victory: the Lord who drove out fear from the heaven of the gods and gave its people back their home.

To reflect on

Causing fear and removing fear can be two faces of the same strength. How do you use the strength you have, and for whom?
