Explanation

Murugan has countless names. Here the poet chooses three. 'Murugan' means the beautiful one, the ever-young. 'Kumaran' means the youth, the beloved son. 'Guhan' means the one who dwells in the cave, the cave of the heart. Together they speak of his beauty, his youth and his presence within.

What the poet asks for is not the ability to say the names, which anyone has, but 'mozhindhu urugum seyal', the act of saying them and melting. The name on the tongue, the melting in the heart, and the awareness that rises from it: that is the whole of bhakti in one line. The prayer of the kaappu, that the stone heart may melt, sounds again here.

The last line calls him the abode of the eight qualities. Tamil Shaiva tradition lists them as self-dependence, a pure form, natural wisdom, all-knowing, freedom from bonds, boundless grace, infinite power and unending bliss. All of them live in the Lord whose names make the heart melt.

Kanda Puranam, the birth of Murugan

The Six Babies of the Saravana Pool

From the Kanda Puranam. When the devas could no longer bear Sooran's cruelty, they prayed to Lord Shiva, and from his third eye came six sparks of fire. Vayu and Agni carried them to the Ganga, and the Ganga carried them to the Saravana pool. There, on six lotus flowers, appeared six beautiful babies.

The six Krittika maidens nursed and cared for them. One day Goddess Parvati came to the pool and lovingly gathered all six babies into her arms at once. At that moment they became a single child with six faces and twelve arms.

So he came to be called by many names: Skanda or Kandan, the one gathered into one; Karthikeya, child of the Krittikas; Saravanabhava, born in the Saravana pool; and Kumara, the beloved son. Each name carries a story, which is why devotees say them over and over and melt, as Arunagirinathar prays to do in this verse.
