Meaning

Can those who have not received his grace, knowing 'Murugan of the peerless vel is the sage, our guru', ever know it? It stood as that which is not form and not formless, not being and not non-being, not darkness and not light.

Explanation

The first two lines name the way: take Murugan as guru and receive his grace. Effort of the intellect alone cannot reach this.

The last two lines then deny six times over: not form, not formless; not being, not non-being; not darkness, not light. Call it form, and it is also beyond form; call it light, and it is beyond the pair of light and dark. Our language is built from pairs of opposites, and this reality stands beyond every pair.

Arunagirinathar is singing in Tamil the method the Upanishads call 'neti neti', 'not this, not this'. Each 'andru', 'it is not', clears away one more idea, until only the experience itself is left. The verse does not describe the reality; it removes the descriptions that stand in its way.

Shiva Purana and the Arunachala Mahatmya

The Pillar of Fire Without Beginning or End

From the Shiva Purana and the Arunachala Mahatmya. Once Brahma and Vishnu argued over which of them was greater. Suddenly a vast pillar of fire appeared between them. They agreed that whoever first found its bottom or its top would be the greater.

Vishnu became a boar and dug down into the earth; Brahma became a swan and flew upward. Ages passed and neither found an end. Vishnu humbly admitted that he had failed. Then Lord Shiva came forth from the pillar of light.

The place where that pillar of fire stood is Thiruvannamalai, Arunagirinathar's own town, where the hill itself is worshipped as that fire. The story's message matches this verse: what effort cannot measure is revealed through humility and grace. The light that has no beginning or end can be known, but not by those who try to grasp it on their own.
