Explanation

Two mounts face each other in this verse: the black buffalo of Yama, Lord of Death, and the bright-plumed peacock of Murugan. Against the darkness of death stands the colour of grace. The poet does not ask, 'Will you come?' He says firmly, 'edhirappaduvaay', 'you will appear before me'.

Why such certainty? The second half explains. This is the Lord who struck down Sooran when the asura stood in the sea as a giant mango tree. He defeated a foe who made even Indra and the devas tremble. For him, facing Yama on behalf of one devotee is no great matter.

Indian tradition holds deeply that the thought in the mind at the last moment shapes what follows; the Bhagavad Gita says that whoever leaves the body remembering the Lord goes to him. The poet's prayer is that at that hour, the vision before his eyes will be not the buffalo but the peacock.

Markandeya Purana, Shiva Purana and the Thirukkadaiyur tradition

The Grace That Kicked Death Away

From the Shiva Purana and the tradition of Thirukkadaiyur. The sage Mrikandu and his wife Marudvati had long been childless. When they prayed to Lord Shiva, they were asked: 'Do you want a dull son who lives long, or a wise son who will live only sixteen years?' They chose the wise son, and he was Markandeya.

When his sixteenth year came, Markandeya was worshipping at Thirukkadaiyur, clasping the Shiva linga in his arms. Yama arrived on his buffalo and threw his noose, and it fell around the linga as well. At once Shiva burst out of the linga and kicked Yama away with his foot. Markandeya was blessed to remain sixteen for ever.

This is the root story of the faith that God will stand between the devotee and Death. Arunagirinathar sings with that same faith when he tells Murugan, the son of that Shiva, 'When Yama comes on his buffalo, you will come on your peacock and stand before me.'
