Meaning

The Lord who is able to remove the great illusion taught me with all six of his faces, yet I have not left it behind. Swooning over house, clothing and women, I still stand hesitating inside the illusion of the world!

Explanation

We might expect that someone who has received a great experience would be transformed at once. Arunagirinathar does not pretend so. He heard the teaching from all six faces of the Lord, he says, and still his mind hovers around house, clothes and pleasures, unable to step away.

This honesty is the strength of the book. The spiritual path is rarely a single leap. Even after seeing the light, the mind has a habit of drifting back to its old darkness. The last word, 'thayanguvadhe', 'still hesitating', is a lament.

Yet there is hope hidden in it. To see clearly that one is hesitating is already the first step out. A person fully lost in illusion does not know he is lost; the poet knows, and grieves, and that grief turns him back towards the Lord who can remove the great illusion.

Devi Bhagavata Purana, Book 6

Narada Is Shown the Power of Maya

From the Devi Bhagavata Purana. One day Narada said to Lord Vishnu, 'Show me your maya, your power of illusion.' Vishnu asked him to bathe in a lake nearby. Narada dipped into the water and rose up as a beautiful woman, with no memory at all of his former life.

The woman married a king and lived with him for many years. She bore many sons, and they had sons of their own. Then a great war came and all of them were killed. As she sat weeping over them, an old man came and told her to bathe in the same lake. She stepped in, and Narada rose out of the water, his veena in his hand, standing on the bank beside a smiling Vishnu.

What had seemed a whole lifetime had lasted only a few moments. That day Narada understood how real the world's illusion feels while we are inside it, which is exactly the 'jagamaayai' in which Arunagirinathar says he still stands hesitating.
