Explanation

There is a sharp point in the doubling 'paniye paniyaay', 'the work as my work'. The world offers many kinds of work; the poet asks for only one. Let singing of Murugan's peacock, his vel and his rooster be my whole occupation. Arunagirinathar later sang a separate set of verses on each of these three, the Mayil Viruttam, the Vel Viruttam and the Seval Viruttam, so we can see that this prayer was granted.

The peacock is called 'aadum pari', the dancing horse: it is Murugan's mount, as a horse is a warrior's, but it moves in dance. The rooster is 'ani seval', the rooster that adorns, because it sits on Murugan's banner.

Calling Murugan 'brother of the elephant-faced one' carries on from the opening prayer. Ganesha's valour in subduing the asura Gajamukhan and Murugan's valour in subduing Sooran are the glory of a single family, and the poet greets the younger brother by honouring the elder.

Kanda Puranam and the Vinayaka Purana tradition

The Asura Who Became a Mouse

From the Kanda Puranam and the Vinayaka Purana tradition. The asura Gajamukhan performed fierce penance and won a boon that no weapon could ever kill him. Swollen with pride, he tormented the devas and made them stand before him holding their ears and doing sit-ups in humiliation.

The devas cried to Lord Shiva, and Ganesha went out to fight the asura. Not one weapon could touch him. Then Ganesha broke off his own tusk and hurled it. A tusk is not a weapon but a part of the body, so the boon gave no protection. The asura turned into a giant mouse and rushed at Ganesha, who held him down and made him his vehicle.

From that day the devas did their sit-ups, the thoppukaranam, before Ganesha instead, and devotees still do so in his temples. The 'peerless elephant who struck down Gajamukhan' in this verse is Ganesha, the victor of that battle.
